EXILES by James Joyce

An Out of [Context] Production by Dunnico Theatre

August 2nd  - 4th 2013

Etcetera Theatre, Camden, London

(Part of Camden Fringe 2013)

A complex, absorbing drama of frustration, desire and tangled relationships, Exiles is the only play by James Joyce, one of the greatest writers of the twentieth century. Dunnico Theatre presents a bold new version of this under-appreciated treasure.

Rick, a young writer still smarting from the failure of his first novel, has recently returned to London after two years in Italy with his girlfriend, Bella. Stuck for ideas for his second book and reluctant to accept a position of writer-in-residence at his old school, he tries to engineer an affair between Bella and Rob, an old classmate and friend.

Bella believes Rick wants the affair to happen so he can freely cheat on her with Rob's younger cousin, and seemingly Rick's muse, Bea. Rob, who has loved Bella since they met, has no idea Rick knows how he feels. As this manufactured infidelity comes to a head, all involved must confront the situation, and decide what they really want.

A rarely-performed piece from early in its author's career, Exiles is usually viewed through the prism of Joyce's own life, only valued for its insight into his own tempestuous relationship with Nora Barnacle and its early exploration of issues more fully visited in later works such as Ulysses. Dunnico Theatre's production aims to put this counter productive contextualisation to one side, relocating the play to a different country in a different century, in the hope of allowing this dark, fascinating story to speak for itself.
